About Kalam

Privacy & choices

Your learning belongs to you. Here is what stays on your device, what reaches other services, and how to make your choices.

Who runs Kalam

Kalam is an educational project run by Kashif Pirzada. For privacy questions or requests, email info@getkalam.net. A parent or guardian should contact us on behalf of a child.

Learning progress stays in this browser

Lesson progress, stars, memorization, known words, Ramadan activities, saved Reading Room positions, reading preferences and grown-up settings are saved on your device. Optional setup choices—who is learning, home language, school of practice and a heritage to explore—also stay on this device. Learning preferences lets you edit or clear these choices without deleting progress. There are currently no learner accounts or cloud backups. Switching browsers or clearing site data can remove your progress.

The Grown-ups area has a reset for learning progress. To remove all saved Kalam preferences as well, use your browser’s site-data controls for this domain. The getkalam.net and qurantutor99.web.app addresses have separate browser storage.

Microphone recordings

Record-and-compare asks for microphone permission only when you choose to record. Your recording stays in the open page’s memory and is not uploaded. It is discarded when you replace the recording or close or reload the page. You can revoke microphone permission in your browser.

Basic usage counts

We use PostHog, hosted in the United States, to understand which sections are used and whether lessons work well. We send a small set of events: opening the app, completing optional setup (without its answers), opening a section or book, starting or passing a lesson, playing practice audio, opening a khutbah, and arriving from the Friday Letter. Events may include the content identifier, a star count, audio type, or a talk’s region and language.

We use a random identifier that lasts only for the open page. We do not save analytics identifiers in cookies or browser storage, create learner profiles, record screens, capture typed text, or send page URLs, search terms, recordings, school or heritage preferences to PostHog. We disable analytics geolocation. Like any internet service, PostHog receives network information such as an IP address when a connection is made.

We respect Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control by leaving analytics off. You can also turn usage counts off below. This does not affect the lessons. These information pages themselves do not load PostHog.

Enable JavaScript to change this setting.

The earlier version of Kalam used PostHog’s default settings. This update removes this project’s old browser identifiers when the app next opens. Turning off future counts does not delete events already received; contact us about previously collected information. Because current events do not include your name or email, we may not be able to identify your events reliably.

Services your browser connects to

These services may process data outside your country. See Google’s privacy policy, Cloudflare’s privacy policy, and PostHog’s privacy policy.

The optional Kalam Letter

Adults can choose daily inspiration or a Friday letter. We store the email address, chosen frequency, confirmation and unsubscribe dates, and delivery status in Cloudflare D1. A confirmation link verifies the address before newsletters begin. SendGrid processes your address and email content to deliver the messages and manage delivery failures. These services may process information outside your country.

We do not import subscribers from other products. Each email includes links to change frequency and unsubscribe. We disable SendGrid open and click tracking for Kalam’s messages. Short-lived, hashed network identifiers help limit signup abuse; they expire within two hours. Unconfirmed signups are removed after 30 days. We retain subscription and delivery records to respect opt-outs and investigate sending problems; contact us to request deletion. Saved duas stay on your device.

See Twilio SendGrid’s privacy notice. To ask about newsletter records, email info@getkalam.net.

Children and messages to us

Kalam’s lessons do not ask children for a name, email address, account or payment information. The optional Kalam Letter signup is for adults and parents. Children should ask a grown-up to send a support or correction request. Please leave children’s identifying details out of messages.

If you email us, your email address and message reach our mailbox so we can respond. We use them to handle your request, not to subscribe you to marketing. We do not sell your personal information. Ask us to review, correct or delete information you have sent, or to explain what we retain. We will explain any limits that apply to your request.
